As a result, PV system operators have an overview of all relevant energy flows in the home. Using the individualized recommended actions, they can make decisions about when to use their solar power best. In particular, the Sunny Home Manager is key to automated integration of controllable loads and also serves as energy manager in storage systems with the Sunny Boy Smart Energy or Sunny Island.

Monitor and Act

System monitoring with the Sunny Home Manager

Every residential PV system can be conveniently and seamlessly monitored with the Sunny Home Manager. After a simple commissioning procedure using the installation wizard, all basic functions are available via Sunny Portal. The PV system operator can use the live display to quickly get updated on energy home management. The data is updated every ten seconds, thereby playing a key role in helping to secure yield from the PV plant. In this process, the energy values for PV generation, purchased electricity and grid feed-in are registered from the connected power meters via various interfaces.

Think and Control

Energy management with the Sunny Home Manager

Energy management in the SMA Smart Home is not a static and pre-defined process, instead the Sunny Home Manager looks around and thinks for itself. For example, it uses the local weather forecast to calculate how much solar power is expected to be available over the course of the day. Even more, the Sunny Home Manager learns the typical time at which household appliances are operated (load profile) and takes this into account in its calculation for energy management. The result: Thanks to the recommended actions provided, system operators receive guidance when and for how long they can use the solar power — optimally. For example, to start the washing machine.
Thanks to this unique service, PV plants with Sunny Home Manager reach a higher level of self-consumption, which is specifically important in Germany. Furthermore, time-of-use electricity tariffs are considered, the system is well prepared for future changes of the electricity supply conditions.

The status screen shows the current energy flow as an animated, live graphic and in numerical values.

A graphic shows the day’s weather forecast for the system’s location and the expected PV generation . In addition to an automatically generated timetable for the controllable loads, the Sunny Home Manager also provides recommended actions to increase self-consumption. The display also shows the current plan for operation of the controllable loads.

Load control with SMA Smart Home

The Sunny Home Manager integrates controllable loads fully in accordance with the PV system operator’s individual requirements. Specifically, this means that common household appliances, such as washing machines or dishwashers, can be switched on or off remotely. This takes places either via the SMA radio-controlled socket for usual appliances or via data connection (Ethernet) for Smart appliances, i.e. for heat pumps from Stiebel Eltron, Tecalor or other white ware from Miele.
This not only further increases self-consumption, but also helps users to record the specific load profiles of individual appliances, thereby helping them to identify electricity guzzlers.

SMA Smart Home

This is the hub for SMA’s intelligent energy management: The Sunny Home Manager is the control center for the SMA Smart Home. Besides the basic solution with Sunny Home Manager and SMA radio controlled sockets, also the SMA Integrated Storage System with the Sunny Boy Smart Energy and the SMA Flexible Storage System with the Sunny Island use the energy management features. With its “expertise,” the Sunny Home Manager ensures that self-generated energy is put to good use — in an optimal way to operate household appliances and store excess power in the battery for later use — or feed power into the utility grid when no other use can be organised. With the Sunny Home Manager, system operators are in complete control and can keep an eye on everything.

Energy Management for Bosch/Siemens home appliances via EEBUS

  • Integration of EEBUS compatible Bosch/Siemens home appliances in Sunny Home Manager energy management.
  • Simple process to establish the EEBUS data connection between Sunny Home Manager and EEBUS compatible Bosch/Siemens dishwashers, washers and tumble driers.
  • Increased PV self consumption and reduction of energy cost through EEBUS controlled load shifting.
  • EEBUS is available for all appliance manufacturers as an open standard. In the near future more smart appliances will join in the EEBUS connected smart home.

Battery Charge Time Window control – you decide, when your batteries shall be charged.

  • Applicable specifically for home owners who get a time-of-use tariff from their power company.
  • Charge your battery with low cost power and use the stored energy in times, when grid power is high in price.
  • Definition of time windows, where batteries shall be charged at a defined charge power.
  • Available for AC coupled SMA storage battery systems (Sunny Island or Sunny Boy Storage).

Zero Export control for PV systems with AC coupled storage batteries.

  • ... up to now, Zero Export was supported for PV systems with inverters only.
  • Inclusion of AC coupled storage batteries in Zero Export control. This enables you to use an optimum amount of your self generated PV energy.
  • A default waiting cycle of 5 seconds allows the battery inverter to use excess PV power for charging before the PV inverter output is scaled down to avoid grid feed-in.
  • Available for AC coupled storage battery systems (Sunny Island or Sunny Boy Storage and other battery storage systems).
  • Please note: In Zero Export mode, a minimum level of power feed-in cannot be avoided. The amount of feed-in depends on the number of household load changes and composition of the PV system.

Extensions for the SMA Smart Home system:

  • New RC sockets and RC switches available through integration of Plugwise home automation components (Plugwise Circle, Sting and Stealth)
    SMA Bluetooth RC sockets still are available. In regards to energy management functionality, SMA Bluetooth RC sockets and Plugwise RC sockets are identical.

    • For compatibility of the Plugwise components, the Plugwise base station Stretch needs to have a minimum firmware version 2.7.7 (see further notes below).
    • To connect the Sunny Home Manager with the Plugwise components, please find a description in the Quick Reference Guide or in the new version of the Planning Guidelines "SMA Smart Home".
    • ON/OFF control and enabling the Auto-Mode for Plugwise RC sockets is done via Sunny Portal or the Sunny Portal App. (no control button for Plugwise RC sockets). Setup of the basic Plugwise system is described in Plugwise's device documentation.

  • SMA provides a new SMA Appliance Control Set containing 4 Plugwise RC sockets Circle and the base station Stretch in 4 country versions (Start of delivery will be announced). The set comprises the correct firmware versions for full compatibility with the Sunny Home Manager system.
  • New features for energy management of Smart Appliances with control via direct data connection (variable load appliance)

    • Mennekes Amtron charge stations are controlled with power level recommendations. (Amtron Firmware minimum version 1.07, update process acc. to Mennekes instruction manual). With this feature, it is possible to consume excess PV energy to an extremely high degree independent from a changing weather situation.
    • Stiebel Eltron heatpumps (with WPM 3 and LWZ) are controlled via plug&play via direct data connection in the local area network.

  • Full support of lead acid storage batteries (FLA) for prognosis based storage management. With this extension, all available battery types can be controlled in energy management.
  • Miele appliances in the Miele@home system with base station XGW3000 or XGW2000 are fully supported in energy management.


New documentation and application support:


New features in Sunny Portal for Sunny Home Manager PV plants:

  • In Sunny Portal section "Overview of New Device" it now is possible to transfer multiple new devices to the PV plant. In comparison with the one-by-one transfer method, this significantly saves time during plant setup.
  • Sunny Portal Apps now are available in a new version with simplified operation of appliances and other new features. (iOS and Android versions available)
  • Various bug fixings


Note:

  • Update of Plugwise Stretch: The update commands are triggered via the Stretch's HTML Interface, which can be entered via the Plugwise App (please refer to the Plugwise documentation).
  • Safety status of RC sockets during communication disturbance: Besides On/OFF so far, there was another state "keep last known status". Due to potential safety hazards, this state is not supported anymore for new load profiles. Existing load profiles, which used this state, will be transitioned to a new setting with the next active change of the load profile. With the change, only the states "ON" or "OFF" can be selected.

  • Support of Zero Export Control (0% Feed-in)
  • Realisation of residential PV Systems for 100% self-consumption
  • According to measured PV generation and household consumption levels, SMA PV inverters are dynamically controlled to avoid any feed-in of PV power into the grid.
  • Complies with regional requirements by grid operators/power companies (i.e. in Australia/Spain/Chile)
  • This version does not yet support battery inverters (SunnyBoy Smart Energy/Sunny Island or other manufacturers).


Energy management for large appliances via relay control

  • Example: Control of heat pumps with control input (SG-Ready) and heater elements
  • Remote-controlled-socket switches appliance via a relay or contactor (single-/three-phase)
  • Power consumption is fixed in load/appliance profile

More efficient use of energy through optimized storage management for Sunny Island

  • Reduction of derating losses through use of forecast excess energy from dynamic active power limitation to charge the battery. The required firmware version for Sunny Island: 3.100 (in the case of earlier firmware versions, the normal Sunny Island mode will resume without taking Sunny Home Manager control into account)

 

Improved information as a result of fundamental optimizations of visualization and load definition

Performance features:

Support of Sunny Boy Smart Energy
The new Sunny Home Manager firmware Version 1.08. fully supports the Sunny Boy Smart Energy within the Integrated Storage System (ISS).

  • For further optimization of the self-consumption rate, the new load management system specially controls charging and discharging of the Sunny Boy Smart Energy’s integrated battery storage.
  • Controlled usage of the excess peak PV energy, which otherwise would be lost due to the 70%/60% active power feed-in limitation. Instead of dumping this excess energy, it is possible to charge the Sunny Boy Smart Energy’s battery with free-of-cost energy.

Further features and corrections:

  • With an activation of the automatic update function of the Sunny Home Manager, also the automatic update of the radio-controlled sockets is initiated. It is now secured, that all components of the system are correctly updated to the most recent firmware version.
  • In case of a device- or meter-replacement within the Sunny Home Manager system, the occurrence of data inconsistencies in the energy reports is avoided.

Version 1.07.x.R (January 2014)

Performance features:

Support of further load types:
With the new version of the Sunny Home Manager, you can also select the load types "Stiebel Eltron WWK 300" and "Tecalor TTA 300" in the radio-controlled socket configuration.

This means that all device-relevant properties are set directly and the user does not have to make any further settings. Also, with these two load types, certain properties cannot be changed (e.g. the minimum switch-off time) in order to guarantee safe operation.

Furthermore, both of these load types are only switched off by the Sunny Home Manager at the end of a time window if they are in standby operation. This ensures that operation continues long enough for water heating.

If you have activated the automatic software update function in the Sunny Home Manager, the update will be performed automatically. Otherwise, you can reactivate the automatic update function short-term - the update will then be performed. Afterwards you can deactivate the automatic update function again.

Version 1.06.x.R (August 2013)

Performance features:

Support of optional loads - The new version of the Sunny Home Manager allows for a variably adjustable load control which makes it possible to operate devices purely with PV energy or even with surplus PV energy (which is not allowed to be fed into the electricity grid). With this, each time period can be configured in such a way that the load must run in all cases and is optimally scheduled (as previously) or only runs when certain conditions are met, for example when sufficient PV energy is available.

Grid management service via Ethernet-based communication - In order to satisfy the conditions for KfW aid (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau - German Development Loan Corporation) for battery storage systems in Germany, the Sunny Home Manager has an Ethernet-based interface. This can be used to limit the active power feed-in or to change the reactive power settings of the PV plant remotely.

General optimizations and error corrections - Further optimization and stabilization measures have been made in Sunny Portal and the firmware 1.06.x.R. It is now possible, for example, to carry out the configuration of the SMA radio-controlled sockets as "standard user". Therefore it is no longer necessary to be logged in as "Installer" for these settings. Also, the forecast has been improved and now allows for the displaying of the generation forecast in all countries.

Information: the version 1.05.x.R is an unpublished version - therefore there is a jump to version 1.06.x.R.

Version 1.03.x.R (December 2012)

Performance features:

Limitation of the active power feed-in
- The grid operator may require a permanent limitation of the active power feed-in for your PV plant, i.e. limiting of the active power being fed into the electricity grid to a fixed value or to a percentage of the installed nominal plant power. The Sunny Home Manager monitors the active power being fed into the electricity grid via a feed-in meter. If the active power feed-in exceeds the prescribed limit, the Sunny Home Manager limits the inverter PV generation via Bluetooth®. The Sunny Home Manager prevents yield losses due to unnecessarily strong limitation of PV generation by taking the current self-consumption of the household into consideration.

Presentation of the prognoses
- with immediate effect, presentation of the PV generation prognosis, the weather forecast and the consumption prognosis is available for countries in Europe and Australia.

New menu page "analysis" in Sunny Portal - here, without additional configuration, the most important data and events of the plant will be presented and evaluated for the user. In addition, he will be actively supported via a flexible and intuitive operable user interface.

General optimizations and error corrections - Further optimization and stabilization measures have been made in Sunny Portal and the Firmware 1.03.x.R.

Performance features:

Automatic Update of Connected Devices
- With immediate effect, devices connected to the Sunny Home Manager can be kept up to date with the latest firmware via Bluetooth. This can save time and costs, since updates can be performed without having to be on site at the PV plant. This function can be activated in Sunny Portal by visiting the "Device Properties" page of the Sunny Home Manager and activating the "Automatically Update Software" function for PV plant devices.

- This function has been optimized so that downloading of the new firmware can be performed more reliably in the event of poor or slow internet connections.

General Optimizations and Error Corrections - Further optimization and stabilization measures have been made in Sunny Portal and the Firmware 1.02.7.R.

Performance features:

Device support update - The SMA Bluetooth Piggy-Back Off-Grid* is supported by the new firmware 1.01.0.R. As a result the Sunny Home Manager and the Sunny Backup Set S* can be used together for increased self-consumption.

General optimization and elimination of errors - the firmware 1.01.0.R optimizes and stabilizes existing functions.


*The Sunny Backup Set S and the SMA Bluetooth Piggy-Back Off-Grid are currently only available in Germany.

SMA radio-controlled socket

Remote control, the obvious solution: With the SMA radio-controlled socket loads which can be operated at various times will be activated at the ideal moment. In addition, the SMA radio-controlled socket allows you to precisely measure their energy consumption. This means that it also records, for example, how often, when and how long the respective device operates. Based on the recommended actions the Sunny Home Manager remotely turns on and off household appliances such as washing machines or dishwashers using the SMA radio-controlled sockets. Through the process, you can increase your self-consumption and monitor the load profiles of various appliances, helping you to single out any electricity guzzlers.
