Store solar power and use it flexibly

Use more of the solar energy you generate by embracing battery storage.

Increasing your consumption of self-generated power in your company’s energy mix is the most cost-effective use of solar power.

Why add battery storage to your commercial solar energy system? Control, optimisation and cost savings for your business.

Storing the excess energy generated by your Photovoltaic (PV) array means the ability to use self-generated power whenever you want, allowing control and optimisation of your company’s energy consumption and costs. Every business has a different mix of power requirements, using the SMA Sunny Portal you can fully monitor your usage and manage when it’s optimal to use your self-generated energy for example when the electricity supply from the grid is at peak tariffs. Increasing your consumption of self-generated power in your company’s energy mix is the most cost-effective use of solar power. Even if you already have a solar energy installation, storage can easily be added to upgrade your business system.

SMA powering Britain's farmers

An industry leading poultry farm in Owestry, Shropshire is harnessing renewable, sustainable energy to improve conditions for the birds and the efficiency of the farm. As a proactive pioneer in bringing renewable energy and technology to farming Steve Dixon is leading the way, having recently installed the very first SMA Battery Storage System in the UK.

Back in 2011 SA & DE Dixon Ltd had a 50kW Photovoltaic (PV) Solar energy system featuring SMA inverters, installed on one of their rearing barns.  Impressed with the positive impact that it had on the farm’s energy costs and self-sufficiency, Steve started researching other renewable energy sources.  Embracing the natural features on his farmland, a closed loop water source heat pump was installed, absorbing the heat transfer energy from the bed of a lake on the property.  This heat pump is used to provide warm air convection heating in two large rearing sheds, providing a much more even and efficient heat transfer for the chicks. This replaced the previous Propane powered heating thereby reducing the condensation, previously experienced in the shed, resulting in drier bedding and better conditioning of the birds.

As expected, with the installation of the heating system there was an increase in AC power requirement due to the compressors and pumps associated with the water source heat pump.  Having already benefited from energy savings with Solar since 2011, Mr Dixon decided to increase his farm’s solar energy capacity to offset this increased power consumption and compliment that with a battery storage system to reduce his reliance on the National Grid for energy requirements.  Steve worked with Gareth Jehu, Managing Director of Solar PV Battery Systems to explore the options.  Wanting a state of the art system they naturally decided on a SMA solution, having installed SMA Tripower inverters in 2011, Steve knew he was investing in quality products, industry leading service and monitoring that SMA delivers, “Everywhere I go to other poultry farms everyone has SMA products so I knew that was the right route to go. Our first installation was 9 years ago and we’ve not had any problems at all.” says Steve.
